PAR-BC initially began as The Society of Medical Residents and Interns of Vancouver. In 1969, 20% of residents “lost” their jobs because of budget cuts. The BCMA discouraged residents from participating in discussions that directly impacted them and scut work was on the rise. The Society decided to form the Professional Association of Residents and Interns (PARI-BC) as its bargaining arm. Its goals were to:

· Protect the interests of interns and residents in all matters

· Improve teaching programs

· Achieve adequate remuneration and working conditions

Despite threats of termination and sanctions the founding residents persevered.
Dr. R. Meek was the founding president.
