Resident Town Hall:

Thank you to everyone who attended the PAR-BC Member Town Hall, which took place on Wednesday February 15 2012.  The recent Bargaining FAQ was summarized in a presentation, and the Bargaining Team was able to address questions regarding the bargaining process, and discuss the next steps with attendees.  We appreciate all the comments and discussions generated and hope to continue membership dialogue.

Tuition Tax Credit Receipt For Medical College of Canada Exams:

Did you write a Medical Council of Canada exam in 2011?

The federal government has included a tuition tax credit in its 2011 budget. On Dec. 15, 2011, the budget received royal assent and became law. The tuition tax credit is expected to apply to Medical Council of Canada (MCC) examinations taken in 2011 and thereafter. In addition, certain ancillary fees, up to a maximum total of $250, are also eligible. These include:

The tuition tax credit receipt will be made available for printing Feb. 1 of the year following the year in which the examination was taken (i.e. the 2011 tuition tax credit receipt will be available Feb. 1, 2012).

You will be able to access the receipt by logging into your MCC-Online account. The tax receipt will appear in your account and will be available for you to print. A paper copy of the tuition tax credit receipt will not be made available by the MCC.

PAR-BC’s Victoria Tax Workshop:

PAR-BC’s popular event is coming to the island on March 14th!

The Victoria Tax Workshop is designed to provide insights on tax filing, saving, and expenses for residents.

PAR-BC’s President, Dr. Joanna Oda, and Executive Director, Ms. Pria Sandhu, will be hosting the Tax Workshop.

The workshop will be held at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

Videoconferencing of the event will be available to Nanaimo and Prince George.

Resident Snapshot Poster Campaign:

PAR-BC’s Communications Committee is running a new poster campaign!

The Resident Snapshot Poster campaign will feature real residents’ photos with captions describing their training and their hobbies.

The goal of the new campaign is to show the human side of residency and to illustrate that residents are training in various hospital sites around BC.

PAR-BC needs your help to produce the new campaign.

PAR-BC would like to congratulate our Resident of the Month for November, Dr. Smoragiewicz!

Here’s what one nominator said about Dr. Smoragiewicz:

I wanted to nominate a

3rd Year Internal Medicine Resident for

Resident of the month: Dr. Martin Smoragiewicz.

 This resident exemplifies what it means to stand up for others. As our senior resident on a Cardiology ward, at a time when our staff person was extraordinarly tough and demeaning, he confidently stood up for us and brought the issue up with the staff person. This resulted in an apology from that person and made for a much easier remainder of the week. Overall it is a tough rotation and we are constantly under pressure but he takes his time to make sure we are alright with our workload and does many things for us so that we are allowed to try to understand our patients rather than run around.

Could not have asked for a better senior resident to work with.

Communications Update from Dr. Sarah Lea, PAR-BC’s Director of Communications!

It’s hard to believe December is upon us already!

The communications committee has had one meeting so far this year and we’ve laid out our plans for this year. We’ve got a few over arching goals for this year which include increasing PAR-BC’s profile within the resident community and expand our communication profile and promoting the role of residents within both the healthcare system and the general public.

 PAR-BC is here to advocate for residents and this year we hope to create a collective voice of residents across all specialties and different levels of training to inform people about who we are, where we fit into the health care system and just what exactly a resident is. How are we going to do this? Well….it starts with you! We need residents to get involved, to speak their voice and share their ideas with us!!

Movember has become a tradition for UBC Medicine/Dentistry and is UBC Medicine’s official MUS Cancer Fundraiser for the year. In the spirit of healthy competition, we have pitted the residents, the 2015s, the 2014s, the 2012/2013s and the faculty against each other in a fundraising challenge. We will also be competing against other UBC faculties such as the Sauder School of Business and the Law Faculty, so this is our time to shine.

We are also really encouraging more women to participate in the fundraising this year (though female moustache growth will remain optional).

UBC Arts in Medicine Show:

UBC Arts in Medicine will be having a Coffeehouse on November 3rd at the MSAC and we are currently looking for medical students, residents, and faculty to perform for this event. If you sing, dance, want to do a dramatic reading, build rubix cubes, whatever, please send an email to fissa@interchange.ubc.ca with your name, type of performance, and approximate length. This event is a very low key, relaxed evening with great food and a supportive audience, so we encourage you to step out of your comfort zones and perform.

PAR-BC would like to recruit members for the Social Committee. In addition to the very successful events we have organized in the past, this year we would like to promote the Arts and Humanities in Medicine, a project recognizing and encouraging residents to pursue their passion for the arts. This will include such events as a resident Book Club, open mike nights, photography workshops and more. In addition we are forming partnerships with arts organizations around town, including Vancouver Opera, Arts Club Theatre, VSO, the Ballet and others for preferred discounts and access. If you have a passion for the arts and are looking to get involved with the resident committee, we would love to have you on board!

Do you have a desire to change the voice of residency? If so, join PAR-BC’s Communications Committee. All residents are welcome to provide their input for future communications between PAR-BC and the government, resident members, and the public.
